We revisit certain localised variants of the Bennett-Carbery-Tao multilinear restriction theorem, recently proved by Bejenaru. We give a new proof of Bejenaru's theorem, relating the estimates to the theory of Kakeya-Brascamp-Lieb inequalities. Moreover, the new proof allows for a substantial generalisation, exploiting the full power of the Kakeya-Brascamp-Lieb theory.

The optimal $L^p \to L^q$ mapping properties for the (local) helical maximal function are obtained, except for endpoints. We observe that classical arguments of Ricci--Stein can be used to prove $L^p$ bounds for maximal functions associated to lacunary dilates of a fixed measure in the setting of homogenous groups. This recovers some recent results on averages over Kor\'anyi spheres and horizontal spherical averages of a type introduced by Nevo--Thangavelu. We prove a variant of a square function estimate for the extension operator associated to the moment curve in non-archimedean local fields. The arguments rely on a structural analysis of congruences (sublevel sets) of univariate polynomials over field extensions of the base field. We study $L^p$-Sobolev improving for averaging operators $A_{\gamma}$ given by convolution with a compactly supported smooth density $\mu_{\gamma}$ on a non-degenerate curve. In particular, in 4 dimensions we show that $A_{\gamma}$ maps $L^p(\mathbb{R}^4)$ the Sobolev space $L^p_{1/p}(\mathbb{R}^4)$ for all $6 < p < \infty$. This implies the complete optimal range of $L^p$-Sobolev estimates, except possibly for certain endpoint cases. The proof relies on decoupling inequalities for a family of cones which decompose the wave front set of $\mu_{\gamma}$. In higher dimensions, a new non-trivial necessary condition for $L^p(\mathbb{R}^n) \to L^p_{1/p}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ boundedness is obtained, which motivates a conjectural range of estimates., Comment: 60 pages, 4 figures. We establish the $L^p(\mathbb{R}^3)$ boundedness of the helical maximal function for the sharp range $p>3$. Our results improve the previous known bounds for $p>4$. Lebesgue space estimates are obtained for the circular maximal function on the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^1$ restricted to a class of Heisenberg radial functions. Under this assumption, the problem reduces to studying a maximal operator on the Euclidean plane. This operator has a number of interesting features: it is associated to a non-smooth curve distribution and, furthermore, fails both the usual rotational curvature and cinematic curvature conditions., Comment: 52 pages, 2 figures. We adapt Guth's polynomial partitioning argument for the Fourier restriction problem to the context of the Kakeya problem. By writing out the induction argument as a recursive algorithm, additional multiscale geometric information is made available. To take advantage of this, we prove that direction-separated tubes satisfy a multiscale version of the polynomial Wolff axioms. Altogether, this yields improved bounds for the Kakeya maximal conjecture in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with $n=5$ or $n\ge 7$ and improved bounds for the Kakeya set conjecture for an infinite sequence of dimensions., Comment: 43 pages, 6 figures. We consider a higher dimensional version of the Benjamin--Ono equation, $\partial_t u -\mathcal{R}_1\Delta u+u\partial_{x_1} u=0$, where $\mathcal{R}_1$ denotes the Riesz transform with respect to the first coordinate. We first establish sharp space--time estimates for the associated linear equation. These estimates enable us to show that the initial value problem for the nonlinear equation is locally well-posed in $L^2$-Sobolev spaces $H^{s}(\mathbb{R}^d)$, with $s>5/3$ if $d=2$ and $s>d/2+1/2$ if $d\ge 3$. We obtain new bounds for the Kakeya maximal conjecture in most dimensions $n<100$, as well as improved bounds for the Kakeya set conjecture when $n=7$ or $9$. For this we consider Guth and Zahl's strengthened formulation of the maximal conjecture, concerning families of tubes that satisfy the polynomial Wolff axioms. The theory of Fourier integral operators is surveyed, with an emphasis on local smoothing estimates and their applications. After reviewing the classical background, we describe some recent work of the authors which established sharp local smoothing estimates for a natural class of Fourier integral operators. We also show how local smoothing estimates imply oscillatory integral estimates and obtain a maximal variant of an oscillatory integral estimate of Stein. Together with an oscillatory integral counterexample of Bourgain, this shows that our local smoothing estimates are sharp in odd spatial dimensions. Motivated by related counterexamples, we formulate local smoothing conjectures which take into account natural geometric assumptions arising from the structure of the Fourier integrals., Comment: 58 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables. The sharp Wolff-type decoupling estimates of Bourgain--Demeter are extended to the variable coefficient setting. These results are applied to obtain new sharp local smoothing estimates for wave equations on compact Riemannian manifolds, away from the endpoint regularity exponent. The Fourier restriction phenomenon and the size of Kakeya sets are explored in the setting of the ring of integers modulo $N$ for general $N$ and a striking similarity with the corresponding euclidean problems is observed. One should contrast this with known results in the finite field setting.
